Kia Kaha |
The Kia Kaha series is an expression of my idolised future of the people of New Zealand. They are merging from Pakeha and Māori lineage, standing strong and proud in both cultures and embracing all that has to give them. Creating a strong unique individual, unlike any other. The drawings aim to unify the traditional and modern, both visually as well as politically.
I think that it’s important to create Art which is looking forward, in a positive light, creating a scene of hope and aspiration. This series was created to celebrate, promote and encourage Tikanga Māori and create a sense of whanaungatanga between Māori and Pakeha and those individuals that have connections to both cultures.
Being born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand as a New Zealand European Pakeha, the Māori culture and the visual aspects of the culture have always been of great fascination to me, although I haven’t been submerged in the culture myself. My artwork shows a direct link to this. It feels organic and natural for me to draw and paint what’s around me and inspiring for me, which is the Māori culture and its beautiful art form of ta moko.
My aim isn’t to be culturally insensitive or offensive but rather the opposite. I have aimed to draw Kirituhi on their skin. Kirituhi is a Māori style tattoo either designed by a non-Māori or made for a non-Māori wearer. It’s a respectful way for those of us who love the beauty of ta moko and the moko kauae to enjoy the art form.
